VIDEO: Amber English Takes Olympic Gold in Upset Victory

Team USA’s Amber English made history Monday. The Army 1st Lt. knocked off the reigning Olympic champion in Skeet, setting a world record on her way to claiming Olympic gold.

Amber English Takes Olympic Gold

English came into the Tokyo Olympic games ranked #24 in the world. The U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program shooter found her best stuff when it mattered most. Making her Olympic debut after near misses at making the team in 2012 and 2016, English shot lights out at the games. Even more remarkable, the win comes after she stepped away from the sport following the death of her father, reported Team USA. And she gave credit to teammate, and fellow gold medal winner Vincent Hancock, for helping getting her back on the range.

“It was definitely challenging,” she said, reported Team USA. “After he passed, it was hard to get back on the range, because it actually reminded me of him. Vinny (Hancock) was the one who got me back out there. I owe him a lot for pushing me to get back out there and shoot.”

English found herself tied at 38 apiece with reigning champ, Italy’s Diana Bacosi, after 40 targets. But down the stretch, English caught fire. She closed out the match with a record of 56 hits, and she became only the second U.S. woman to medal in Skeet at the Olympics, reported Team USA.

“I was very fortunate to put everything together at the right time,” she said, reported Team USA. “I trained very hard. There are some things that I would like to go back (to) from the match, but the shooters that adapt faster are the ones who get better results. All I could control was my own shooting and emotions. It is always down to the last wire.”
