The Ipswich Police Department revived their teaching of the national Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program by holding a class at Ipswich High School in early May.
According to the Hudson Sun, the program has not been taught in Ipswich, Massachusetts in many years. RAD has been a national program since 1989, and many certified instructors teach it.
The class in Ipswich was taught by Officer Taryn Brotherton and Sgt. Jason Monteiro. The class, which lasts 12 hours over a four-day period, teaches basic self defense skills to women of all ages. The class first begins in the classroom, where students are taught awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance.
After the classroom portion, students will learn hands-on defense training, the Sun said. This includes a simulation where the student wears special protective gear and faces a simulated attacker. Any student who completes the program can practice their newly-learned techniques at any location in the country which teaches RAD classes.
For information on upcoming classes contact Brotherton or Monteiro at the Ipswich Police Department, 978-356-4343.
