The Smyrna Police Department is set to host a women’s self defense class next month. The workshop will be based on the R.A.D. system of self defense.
According to WGNS, R.A.D. (RAPE, AGGRESSION and DEFENSE) is a self defense program which teaches women techniques to resist rape/aggression, in addition to enhancing the “fight or flight” response when encountering aggression and dangerous situations.
The class is 12 hours total, and it is divided into 4 separate, 3-hour class. The course teaches students physical defense tactics, in addition to techniques for preventing physical attacks through “situation awareness” and utilizing the “sixth sense,” WGNS said.
All newly-learned skills will be put to the test in a training simulation with an aggressor.
The class is set for July 9, 10, 16 and 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mother/daughter teams are encouraged. The minimum age to attend is 12 years old. The cost for the class is $25.00 per household.
