The Spyderco Endela Wharncliffe — New Level of EDC Utility and Defense

Spyderco Knives is no stranger to the EDC and self-defense communities, for well-designed hard use cutlery. Known for using premium steels and always pushing the boundaries of comfortable, lightweight carry options, they are a fan favorite. Spyderco further illustrates this with its latest offering, the Endela Wharncliffe.

The Spyderco Endela Wharncliffe

When Spyderco first released the Endela many greeted it with great enthusiasm. According to Spyderco, it “split the difference” between the iconic Delica 4 and Endura Lightweights. Similarly, it included all of the features of the two time-tested designs, but in a perfect “in-between” size. However, the latest addition of a Wharncliffe blade profile, takes the Endela to a new level of utility and self-defense.

According to Spyderco’s website, “The latest version of this popular design supercharges its performance with the addition of a Wharncliffe blade profile. In classic style, its perfectly straight edge and gracefully curved spine merge to create an amazingly versatile blade shape that offers both extreme cutting power and scalpel-like precision.”

The 3.4-inch blade is full-flat ground from VG-10 stainless steel. VG-10 is known for great edge retention, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and toughness. Although it has great edge retention, it will need sharpening, eventually. Fortunately, VG-10 also has a reputation for easy sharpening and maintenance.

The blade is available in either PlainEdge or SpyderEdge (serrated) formats and includes the Trademark Round Hole for one-handed opening. A sturdy back lock mechanism holds the knife in lockup, at its full 7.99-inch length.

The blade sits in a 4.69-inch handle made of injection-molded FRN (fiberglass-reinforced-nylon), providing excellent durability and light, 3.2-ounce carry. Likewise, skeletonized stainless steel liners provide a sturdy base. A non-slip bi-directional texture pattern promotes a solid purchase on the Endela, even when wet. Although it comes configured for right-hand tip up carry, a four-position pocket clip offers a choice of right- or left-hand tip up or tip down carry.
