The 20 Best Guns For Law Enforcement in 2016

Law enforcement officers need rifles, handguns, and shotguns that perform reliably each and every time they’re put into use. These tactical guns are built for hard use and to give every officer the edge they need to perform their duties in any environment.

Here are some of the best new products hitting the market in 2016.

Handguns

Beretta Px4 Storm Subcompact

Here’s a gun with features and firepower you’d not expect on a handgun this size. Like its bigger brothers, you get interchangeable backstraps, an accessory rail, a reversible magazine release, an ambidextrous safety, a black Bruniton finish and a DA/SA trigger. Its polymer frame keeps its weight down to 26.1 ounces, yet in 9mm it has a 13+1 capacity. (beretta.com)

Bersa Thunder 380 Combat Plus

Most compact .380 ACP pistols have a reduced magazine capacity, but not the Bersa Thunder 380 Combat Plus. It has the same features and many of the same dimensions as the Thunder 380 Combat, but instead of an 8+1 capacity, it carries a full 15+1 capacity. The Combat versions have distinctive green, rubber, wraparound grips; larger slide serrations; a re-designed slide with a lower profile; a more rounded triggerguard; and a smaller beavertail for better concealment. FNS Series

The FNS series of pistols from FN—now available in a compact size for concealed carry—offer the simplicity of striker-fired operation combined with the proven ergonomics of the FNX platform. With a 7+1 and 8+1 capacity, it also features fully ambidextrous controls, as well as interchangeable backstraps and a serialized modular steel chassis that can be swapped in between different-sized frames. An optional manual safety is available as well as a special extended FIST frame with a standoff device. (honordefense.com; 678-943-8035)

Kahr TP9 Gen2

The new Kahr TP9 Gen2 pistol represents a real upgrade to the standard TP9. The new eight-round 9mm pistol retains the smooth and reliable striker-fired mechanism as well as the polymer frame and ultra-thin, single-stack grip of this premium full-sized pistol. The Gen2 version, however, adds a Picatinny rail on the dust cover for accessory use as well as a newly designed trigger with a front safety lever and improved function. (kahr.com; 508-795-3919)

Kimber K6s

One of the most talked about handguns to hit the scene, the Kimber K6s is a stainless steel, six-shot, .357 Magnum revolver that is about the same size as the old Detective Special. It has a concealed hammer with a smooth double-action-only mechanism, and it weighs just 23 ounces. Unique for a wheelgun, the rear sight is set in a dovetail and the front sight is pinned. The cylinder has flats instead of flutes, the cylinder release is the push-button type, and the grips are ergonomically shaped polymer. (kimberamerica.com; 888-243-4522)

Ruger American Pistol (VIDEO)

The new Ruger American Pistol is a full-sized, polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol available in 9mm or .45 ACP with either a 17- or 10-round capacity. The entire rear of the grip frame is replaceable, allowing the user to adjust the grip size and trigger reach. The new striker mechanism also offers a very short reset and take-up while the low-mass slide, recoil-reducing barrel cam and low bore axis reduce muzzle flip and perceived recoil significantly. The black nitrided slide features Novak LoMount three-dot sights, and the frame has a full-sized Picatinny accessory rail. The slide stop and magazine release are also fully ambidextrous. SCCY CPX-3

SCCY makes some of the smallest subcompacts in 9mm, and now the company has entered the .380 ACP market with its new CPX-3, which has a unique feature the company calls the “Roebuck Quad Lock” system. The barrel locks to the slide in four distinct areas, making the barrel and slide almost a solid piece for enhanced accuracy. With a polymer frame and stainless steel slide, the CPX-3 weighs just 15 ounces unloaded. The top of the slide is laser etched to reduce glare and is finished in black nitride or a natural matte finish. The DAO trigger is set at the factory for a pull weight of 8 pounds. Walther PPS M2

For 2016, Walther has made some changes to the PPS, which is already a highly popular compact handgun for concealed carry. With its 21-ounce weight, the PPS M2’s grip texture has been redesigned and made more “aggressive” to help tame recoil and muzzle flip. By request, the original paddle-style magazine release has been replaced with a conventional button release. Striker-fired, the PPS M2 has a 6.1-pound trigger and is only 1-inch wide. Rifles

Daniel Defense DDM4 ISR

The DDM4 ISR is an integrally suppressed rifle optimized for the versatile 300 Blackout cartridge. The rifle is built around a 9-inch, cold-hammer-forged barrel with a pistol-length gas system calibrated for its integral suppressor. This high-performance rifle delivers both subsonic and supersonic projectiles with greatly reduced muzzle blast and flash, helping to keep the user on target with faster follow-up shots and less degradation of vision, particularly in low-light situations. The DDM4 ISR’s integral suppressor extends the barrel to the NFA-required 16-inch length, so this platform is not classified as an SBR and only requires one tax stamp for the suppressor. LMT Compressor (VIDEO)

At an overall length of 24.5 inches, the Compressor was designed for LE agencies in need of a rifle with a smaller profile for carry. Utilizing the LM8 upper with a 10.5-inch barrel, the Compressor gets its name from its Compressor stock. LMT removed 2.75 inches out of its extension tube and stock, then modified its buffer system and spring, allowing for a shorter overall system with a longer barrel for better velocity and accuracy. The Compressor stock, buffer tube, spring, buffer and drop-in weight system can be purchased as a kit and added to any mil-spec upper, as there was no modification to the bolt carrier or upper receiver itself. Complete rifles are available in 5.56mm and 300 Blackout. (lmtdefense.com; 309-787-7151)

Scheduled for release in the fall of this year, the Revolution will be available with 10.5-, 14.5-, 16- and 18-inch barrels and features all the same enhancements as any POF-USA Gen 4 rifle. This bolt action is chambered for the .308/7.62mm NATO and comes with a fluted, carbon-steel, 24-inch barrel fitted with a muzzle brake, an aluminum chassis and a buttstock adjustable for both length of pull and cheek height. A rail on top of the action makes it easy to mount a scope, and the pistol grip features a target butt for enhanced control. (savagearms.com; 800-370-0708)

New from Windham Weaponry this year is the RCMS-4, a complete multi-caliber system that allows the owner the option of using one basic platform to run 7.62x39mm, 5.56mm, 300 Blackout and 9mm ammo just by switching out the barrel assembly, bolt, magazine and magazine well. The kit includes everything the shooters needs to convert the rifle to their chosen configuration. Added features for the Scorpion package include a padded pistol grip and recoil pad for comfortably shooting heavy loads and a free-floated heat shield to dissipate mirage and protect the barrel. A receiver-mounted, aluminum sidesaddle holds five extra shells at the ready on either side and three add-a-shell units are included.
