When it comes to getting from here to there in the military, nothing oozes cool like the MH-6 Little Bird helicopter. Built out in several configurations, it is the epitome of utilitarian. Its odd look and small size are deceiving, as countless high-level missions have seen this bird in action. This is the story of the killer egg.
The Killer Egg -The Ultimate Combat Taxi
The egg’s genesis began in 1960. The army was seeking a light observation helicopter capable of performing personnel transport, escort, and attack missions, casualty evacuation, and observation. The program ran along with several companies jumping in. The first prototype took to the air in February of 1963. Since that time, the Killer Egg has evolved into quite a Swiss Army Knife of helicopters.

This agile helicopter is outfitted with outboard “benches” designed to ferry up to three operators on each side. There is a gunship variant, the AH-6, painted black for nighttime operations. This small aircraft can conduct rapid insertions and extractions of special operations forces into areas that its larger counterpart, the MH-60 Black Hawk, can’t.
160th SOAR
Where this agile little minx shines is in the hands of the United States Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Also known as the Night Stalkers, this special operations force unit provides helicopter aviation support for general purpose forces and special operations forces.

There are countless images and videos of high-speed operators hitching a ride on the Little Bird’s side benches. Its small size and agility allow it to insert troops into tight spots very quickly. It has an unrefueled range of 250 nautical miles and has been tested and proven in combat. Armed with guns, Hellfire missiles, and 2.75-inch FFAR, it provides armed helicopter support to both ground and air special operations. In the Battle of Mogadishu, the AH-6 version provided critical gun runs for the trapped Rangers in the fight.

While I am undoubtedly a helicopter nerd for all things rotary winged, the MH-6 will always be one of my all-time favorites.
