A group of Marines have come together to save a memorial site from wildfires raging through Camp Pendleton.

According to a Battle Rattle blog post, Cpl. Marvin Arnold of Mike company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines spearheaded a group of seven Marines who traveled up First Sergeant’s Hill at Camp San Mateo to rescue nearly two dozen wooden memorial crosses before they could be destroyed by the fires. Each cross bears unique markings and decorations in honor of fallen Camp Pendleton Marines.

Arnold told Battle Rattle that the crosses have now been placed back at the memorial site with the help of over 100 volunteers from Camp Pendleton’s 5th Marine Regiment. The effort was organized via the Sangin Valley Gun Club Facebook page, who was on hand to take pictures at the event.
