Warriors Heart Fighting PTSD, Substance Abuse with All First Responders

Warriors Heart is a brand new form of treatment for those suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and substance abuse.

Co-founded by U.S. Army veteran Tom Spooner, Warriors Heart is open to all first responders. The organization is looking for warriors from “every walk of life.” It isn’t limited to just military. While active military and veterans make up a large portion of those fighting PTSD battles, Warriors Heart also takes in law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMTs/paramedics.

“They’re always the ones that are running into the gunfire, running into the burning building. They’re the ones that are always going to save others,” Spooner says. “… Our first responders, our firemen, our paramedics, and our law enforcement come onto scenes and see those things that shake up their humanity every single day.”

Warriors Heart Mission

According to the organization’s website, “Warriors Heart “provides private treatment to adult men and women 18 and older who are seeking inpatient treatment for chemical dependency, alcohol abuse, and co-occurring psychological disorders relating to PTSD or the psychological effects of MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury).

“I believe the hardest thing we face trying to get folks to enroll with Warriors Heart is maybe their families are scared to reach out to Warriors Heart and let us know that they need help. The individuals, a lot of times, don’t want to reach out,” says U.S. Army veterans Kyle E. Lamb, who also works with the organization. “But it’s our job … if they’re having trouble in their lives, we have to take care of them.”

The organization’s facility is located on the former site of Purple Sage Ranch in northwest San Antonio.
